Hello my fellow Ragin’ Cajuns. My name is Jamin Brock and I am a junior majoring in Sports Management. I am from Baton Rouge, LA and in high school, I was very involved. I was a member of the Beta Club, Yearbook Staff, and also the Robotics Team. When trying to pick a university to attend after graduation, I came upon UL and I knew this was the school for me, or at least I thought. Visiting the university my senior year was basically the icing on the cake. I knew at that point that I belonged in Cajun Country. Being that I was very involved at my high school, I knew that going to college, I wanted to continue to be active, and that is exactly what I did.
My freshman orientation experience is one that has stuck with me since I entered the doors of the University. Because of the effect my orientation leaders had on me, I knew that getting involved with the Student Orientation Staff was something that I must do. That is exactly what I did. During my first semester I was selected for the 2010 Student Orientation Staff. Becoming a part of this family really was a life-changing experience. I learned a lot of life lesson during my first year on staff. I also got really involved with the University Program Council, became a member of the Infinity Dance Group and was a member of the UL Gospel Choir. Even though I was involved in all those organizations, I did not hold any leadership positions but that quickly changed going into my sophomore year, as I became the Events Committee chairperson for UPC, Head Choreographer for Infinity Dance Group and a member of the Leadership Team for the Student Orientation Staff. I also got involved in a new organization, Black Male Leadership Association, where I am the Public Relations Chairperson.
Going into my junior year, I want to get more involved with other organization that I am currently not a part of. I feel like going to school at this University helped me a lot with breaking out of my comfort zone and opening my mind up to diversity. I got involved in many organizations and it has helped me learn a lot about other students and their background, my university and myself.
Getting involved has been the greatest thing I have done since I became a Ragin’ Cajun. It has allowed me various opportunities to better myself and progress with my networking skills. A huge goal of mine was to become a household name to students at UL an also a face for the university and that is what I feel I have accomplished. Getting involved has allowed me to gain relationship with Deans, Faculty and Staff here at UL. It has also allowed me to grow as a student and as a person. I believe that growth should be something that is continuous and I intend to keep growing while I am a student at the University.
